Virtual Bronchoscopy as a Diagnostic Tool for Peripheral Lung Cancer

Abstract

Introduction: virtual bronchoscopy is a non-invasive method that produces a three-dimensional view of the airway, based on data obtained from helical computed tomography, that provides a view similar to that produced by conventional bronchoscopy. Clinical case: a 49-year-old female patient with symptoms of hemoptysis, weight loss, dyspnea and chest pain. Chest tomography revealed a spiculated nodule with a positive bronchial sign, subsegment C of the anterior segment of the left upper lobe was identified through virtual navigation and, under fluoroscopic guidance, a transbronchial forceps biopsy was performed, with histopathological diagnosis of small cell carcinoma, that reduced surgical time and radiation exposure to the patient and healthcare personnel. Conclusion: computed tomography and bronchoscopy can be used as complementary techniques, for this reason, virtual bronchoscopy provides both diagnostic and potentially therapeutic information.
