Frecuencia de mesotelioma pleural en mujeres mexicanas. Estudio de casos

Resumen
Introducción: El mesotelioma pleural es un tumor raro y agresivo, cuya presentación en mujeres es infrecuente y requiere mayor caracterización clínica.
Métodos: Se realizó un estudio retrospectivo en el Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Respiratorias (enero-diciembre 2024), que incluyó 21 mujeres con diagnóstico histológico.
Resultados: La edad media fue de 63,5 años, el 38% reportó exposición domiciliaria a asbesto. Todas presentaron derrame pleural, 57% hipoxemia y más de la mitad requirió atención de urgencia. El diagnóstico se obtuvo principalmente mediante VATS, con un rendimiento diagnóstico en todas las modalidades del 100%. El subtipo histológico de predominancia fue epitelioide en 90% y todas fueron clasificadas en etapa IV.
Conclusiones: El mesotelioma pleural en mujeres continúa siendo una entidad de diagnóstico tardío, con elevada gravedad clínica y exposición frecuentemente no reconocida al asbesto. La presencia constante de derrame pleural y la alta proporción de pacientes en etapa IV destacan la prioridad de reforzar la sospecha diagnóstica y el acceso oportuno a métodos invasivos de alta rentabilidad, especialmente en contextos donde la exposición domiciliaria puede pasar inadvertida.
