1. Objective, thematic coverage and public: Respirar aims to disseminate the scientific work carried out in Latin America in the area of respiratory pathology. This journal is aimed at health professionals.

2. Sections: Respirar publishes unpublished articles, or from trusted preptrint servers, that are distributed in the following sections: Original articles; Reviews; Clinical cases; Images of respiratory pathology; Recommendations, Consensus and guidelines; Brief Communications; Editorials and Letters from Readers. (See Instructions for authors in Submissions).

3. Peer arbitration: All work received in Respirar is initially evaluated by the Editorial Board, who appoints an Editor to accompany the article throughout the review process. The Editor, who can be one of the Editors-in-Chief or a Deputy Editor, is the one who appoints two reviewers for the evaluation.

The Respirar review process consists of single-blind peer review, meaning that the author does not know who the reviewers are, but the reviewer does know the identity of the authors. The referees are experts on the subject of the manuscript in question, they can be members of the editorial committee of permanent or external advisors of the journal, but never the authorities or the internal work team.

When performing the evaluation, the reviewers complete a review form, make general and specific comments to the authors, and suggest among the following options: 1) Accept the article without modifications. 2) Reject the article. 3) Request corrections for reassessment. The Editors-in-Chief are the ones who make the final decision taking into consideration the opinion of the reviewers and, especially, that of the Deputy Editors. This decision is notified to the authors.

If the decision is “Request corrections for reassessment”, the Editor sends the reviewers' comments to the authors. The author must answer point by point to the comments of the reviewers and send the corrected document with the highlighted modifications. The deadline for sending the new manuscript is 2 months from the date de author receives the comments from the reviewers.  In this case, a second round of review is carried out and the entire procedure is repeated until the final acceptance or rejection of the manuscript.

4. Languages: Respirar receives articles in Spanish, Portuguese and English.

5. Privacy statement: The names and email addresses entered in this journal will be used exclusively for the purposes stated in this journal and will not be passed on to third parties or used for any other purpose.

6. Plagiarism policies: All articles published in Respirar will be previously reviewed using the iThenticate plagiarism detection software. This is the software that uses Similarity Check, a Crossref service that aims to help journal editors determine the originality of the articles they publish. This system makes it possible to detect coincidences and similarities between the texts that have been sent to the journal for evaluation and those previously published in other sources.

7. Code of Ethics: Respirar undertakes to comply with the ethical standards that ensure the integrity of the publication of articles, the ethical conduct of all participants in the editorial process and the editorial process itself. For this, it adheres to the principles of transparency and best practices in academic publications (Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing) established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA), and the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME), and the Singapore Declaration on Research Integrity.

Respirar performs plagiarism detection procedures, duplication of manuscripts and other unethical publication violations; conducts a transparent editorial process through peer review; establishes clear guidelines for the reception of papers, as well as for the evaluation of reviewers to avoid subjectivities or favorable/unfavorable treatment; requests the declaration of conflicts of interest from all participants in the editorial process; it only publishes unpublished original articles written by those who declare their authorship.

To see the ethical norms in the content of the articles, go to Publication regulations in Submissions.

8. Digital preservation policy: Respirar files are permanently and securely preserved through the LOCKSS system (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe). Lockss is an open source system created by the Stanford University Library that enables decentralized and distributed journal preservation, by creating permanent journal archives for preservation and restoration purposes.

Actions are also carried out at the server level, backup, preservation and archiving policies, which guarantee the reconstruction of the entire collection of the magazine and the preservation of each published digital content.

For data deposit of research articles, see Publication regulations in Submissions.

9. Interoperability protocol: Respirar has interoperability protocols https://respirar.alatorax.org/index.php/respirar/oai in base URL for the OAI File.

10. Open Access and Open Science Policies: Respirar follows the principles of the international open access movement (open access) which proposes that all users equally have the free and irrevocable right to access a scientific work. The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) defines Open Access as a term that covers both Gratis and Libre Open Access. According to this, all articles published in Respirar are available for free full text access.

Respirar adheres to the Open Access Budapest declaration https://www.budapestopenaccessinitiative.org/read/ and, as an organization, the Asociación Latinoamericana de Tórax has signed this statement. Following the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI) "by “open access” to this literature, we mean its free availability on the public internet, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself."  The only restriction on reproduction and distribution will be to give authors control over the integrity of their work and the right to be duly acknowledged and cited.

Respirar adheres to the Open Science movement wich UNESCO defines as "a set of principles and practices that aim to make scientific research from all fields accessible to everyone for the benefits of scientists and society as a whole. Open science is about making sure not only that scientific knowledge is accessible but also that the production of that knowledge itself is inclusive, equitable and sustainable."

The adherence of Respirar to all open access and open science iniciatives is evidenced in the choice of the CC licence (point 13), self archiving policies (point 11), the requirement to deposit supporting research data in institucional open access repositories (Publication regulations), accepting papers from trusted preprint repositories (Publication regulations) and allowing authors to retain copyright (point 14).

Self-archiving policy: Respirar allows the self-archiving of articles published in their post-print version (final version edited by the journal), in institutional, thematic repositories, personal web pages or any other electronic media; with the condition that the article published by citation is acknowledged. The only conditions are that express reference to the author is made, that is, that their name appears in any use or exploitation of the work (and that it in no way suggests that the licensor endorses you or your use), providing a link to the license and indicating whether any changes were made.

Copyright: Respirar does not retain copyright so authors may republish their works on the condition that the original publication is cited by citation.

Policy on fees for readers and authors: Respirar does not require a subscription and does not charge authors for sending, processing and/or publishing the referred articles.
